Warrior Legends is a documentary series focused on elite athletes who have shown character and made their mark in the SA OCR community.
The concept was created as a marketing campaign for The Warrior Race, a popular South African OCR event. The idea was to revitalize the OCR community by sharing the stories of the athletes who have contributed to the sport and lived the legacy.
In this episode we had Jay-Jay Deysel, a motocross enthusiast with a kindred spirit. We enjoyed every moment we spent with him and his bike.
The Warrior Race is one of the first OCR (obstacle course race) sport event series established here in South Africa. Over the years it has become a family/community driven event with a mix of hyper-elite competitors and the everyday Joe toeing the same start line.
In the international OCR community, the identity of OCR is centered around taking on the challenge sold in the tone of the famous 300 (film). A common strategy used in OCR marketing was to latch onto a narrative the exemplified an athlete overcoming an obstacle in their own life.
Keeping with the trend of the OCR community, we wanted to take the idea of a motivational advert in a different direction. We had the idea of using a warm encouraging voice opposed to a the almost boasting voice typical of the OCR marketing. We also wanted to link the narration to the visuals of a diverse set of faces and athletes shown in their everyday training. After a two months of planning and production our ideas finally culminated in one of our favorite social media adverts.
